Local Cuisines

Seswaa and phaletshé

There are the most popular traditional dishes in Botswana. Seswaa is prepared by cooking beef or goat meat in water until it is tender. It is then pounded with a wooden spoon until it becomes soft, no spices or vegetables are added, only a bit of salt and cooking oil. The seswaa is eaten with phaletshé(pounded maize cooked into thick porridge)

Dikgobe

Beans and maize are cooked together by boiling them in water and adding a bit of salt and cooking oil only; no spices are used in this dish. It can be eaten alone or with seswaa, beef or chicken stew.

Tswii

It is a dish eaten in the northern region of Botswana where there are rivers as it grows in rivers. It is almost like potatoes, it is mixed with fish or beef and pounded together, no spices are added only water, salt and a bit of cooking oil – for a visit to the Okavango Delta, this dish is never to be missed. It can be eaten alone or with phaletshé as the natives will have it.

Serobe

The intestines of a cow or goat are thoroughly cleaned and cut into small pieces. They are then cooked together until they become tender, only salt and a bit of cooking oil are added, no spices or vegetables. It is eaten alongside phaletshé (pounded maize cooked into thick porridge.)

Koko ya Setswana

Traditionally reared chicken, it tastes much better than a commercially reared one. When cooking it, it is boiled in water, only salt and cooking oil are added, It can be made into a stew with a bit of water left for both if it is to be eaten alongside phaletshé, or it can be fried if it is to be eaten with rice.

Type of Travel

Pre-plan with Agencies

It is possible to plan your trip which is inclusive of game drives. boat cruise or other activities but it will require extensive research, especially if you are new to safari travel – booking directly will give you cheaper rates as compared to third parties.

Hotel Information

Since tourism is at the heart of the country, all hotels and camps are top-notch including guest houses for low budgets. They are well kept and well maintained, so things like hygiene or shabbiness are rarely to be found.

Rent a Car

For self-drives, car hire companies like Avis are used for hiring 4×4 vans at affordable prices ranging from $60 – $100 per day. Self-drives are pretty much common and safe for foreigners, there are hardly roadblocks in the roads unless it is during festive seasons or holidays where police would be setting up some speed traps and doing a few checkups on random vehicles. Once you are in the park, there are trails to follow through. There are some self-drive packages that you can purchase inclusive of 4×4 car rentals, accommodations, and pre-planned activities as well.

Safari

If traveling for a Botswana safari, a thorough knowledge is to be acquired of what one really wants to come and experience. There are mobile safaris, bush camps, and self-drives, which all offer different excursions at different rates. You might need the expertise of a travel consultant to assist you with your journey and match your needs to the perfect package. For all game drives and mokoro (canoe) trips, a well vested professional tour guide is required and most bush camps and hotels offer these in their packages.

Business

If you are traveling for business, which normally will be in the capital city, Gaborone, the Central Business District(CBD) will be the best place for both your accommodations and entertainment – most businesses operate from there and there are also hotels and self-catering apartments ranging from $100 – $200 per night for 2 people. You might want to pass by Mokolodi Nature Reserve or Gaborone Game Reserve to see a few zebras, rhinos, and giraffes.

Least Favorite

Since 70% of the country is a desert, the temperatures can be very high, sunscreen and hats are a must if one is visiting the tourism areas.

Access to some parks have a limited number of persons allowed per day, this might be disadvantageous for those doing self-drives.

Ever heard of “there is no hurry in Africa?”, you may find the use of public transport to be annoying, especially for minibuses, the driver can stay long on a bus stop waiting for customers – it is not a pick and drop. You might want to use a cab or a taxi.

Planning Your Trip

Budget

Due to the types of activities, one must be fully prepared financially, hence the need to really know what type of experience you wish to come and explore and where exactly to go and the type of lodging you want – guest house, bush camping or hotel. Also, some activities need to be booked well in advance.

Sir Seretse Khama International Airport is the hub for all airlines coming from the neighboring countries including Ethiopian and Kenya Airlines.

You can combine the Okavango Delta, Chobe National Park, and Moremi Game Reserve, they are all in the northern region. Mokolodi Nature Reserve or the Kalahari Desert is in the southern region so combining it with either Chobe National Park or the Okavango Delta will not be advisable – it will be time-consuming to travel between the two unless if you are planning for a long stay.

Accommodation prices range from $15 – $205 per night for 2 people sharing in Kasane and Maun.

A typical full-day tour in the Chobe National Park, and Chobe River can cost between $150 – $250 per individual, consisting of a safari game drive in the park and a boat cruise – meals for the day and park entry fees inclusive.

For longer travels that entail visiting many destinations like Chobe, Okavango Delta, Kalahari, and others one may need to budget between $1000 – $9000 depending on the type of activities to be done in each area and the number of days to be spent – for both accommodations and activities.

Best Time to Travel

It is to be noted that traveling to Botswana has good seasons, some seasons are not good for traveling, especially if your visit entails wildlife viewing.

December to April is the rainy season and this is the worst time of year for a safari visit. The weather is not favorable for game drives or mokoro drives – rains can be continues for days like in the areas of Chobe National Park and the Okavango Delta. Many of the animals move deep into the forest and some camps do close their operations, so thorough information is to be fully gathered before bookings are made. It is good for birdwatching and some scenery of newborn animals but this will still be not too often due to the migration.

May to September is the peak for a safari visit of all activities – The rains would have ceased and the animals move down to the rivers in a group with their young ones – the vegetation is all green with flowers having blossomed and it gives such a life thrilling view. The Chobe River, Chobe National Park, Okavango Delta, and the Moremi Game Reserve are to be visited during this season.

October and November are usually very hot especially in the Chobe and Ngamiland areas where most of the activities are, the vegetation also would have changed, trees would have dried up, you can still travel but this is to be considered.

Safety & Security

Over the years, Botswana has been ranked one of the safest and peaceful countries in Africa and the world at large and this has not changed much – besides some minor crimes in cities. Most of the tourist attractions are found in the Maun, Kasane, and Kgalagadi areas. These places are no hubs to crimes besides animals that have the freedom to roam but they are all safe places.

Getting Here

There are no airlines that come directly from other continents to Botswana. When booking a flight, one needs to connect via Johannesburg(OR Tambo International Airport) and land in Gaborone at Sir Seretse Khama International Airport.

South African Airways has a direct flight from Cape Town to Maun.
There is a local bus that transports people from OR Tambo to Gaborone costing around $50. It departs OR Tambo at 12 pm every day.
A connection through Namibia and Ethiopia will also help, these airlines have direct flights to Botswana from each country.

Getting Around

From Sir Seretse Khama International Airport, you can take a cab to your lodging if you are visiting Gaborone but most hotels offer shuttle services. The mode of transport mostly used by the locals is the mini kombis which costs $0.37 while shared taxis cost $0.47. A specially arranged cab costs $4-$6 and unlike the mini kombi or shared taxi, this will drop you off to your exact location.

If you are transcending to Maun or Kasane, the cheapest way is to catch a bus departing at 8 pm at Gaborone bus rank and arriving at 6 am. The fare ranges between $25 – $35. You will have to be prepared for a long-distance travel as the distance to Maun is 850km and to Kasane, it is 925 km.

Dumelang
Loosely Translated to “Agree”, this term is used as a general greeting like “hi” or “hello”. It is used at any time of the day.
